What is a DBS check?
‘DBS’ stands for ‘Disclosure and Barring Service’.
A DBS check is essentially a report of a person’s criminal record.
There are different types of DBS checks, which we cover later on, but they will all look at, and report on, someone’s:
- Spent and unspent convictions;
- Reprimands; and
- Final warnings.
DBS checks primarily exist to allow employers to screen prospective employees.
They are also referenced in respect to roles where people work with children and vulnerable adults – such as schools and care homes etc. Here, DBS checks are, in theory, one effective tool to ensuring children are in a safe and protected environment.
